It does not have a permanent presence unless it is fixed in a recording. The sound, by its very nature, always refers us to the past since it has a limited duration and remains in us only as a souvenir. Also, we cannot deny the contribution, with its own look, made by technology. In this context, notions such as soundscape, sound space, sound environment, sound memory or noise pollution have arisen, among many others, all as a product of interbreeding sound discipline with other areas such as health, history, anthropology, ecology or sociology, to name a few. For example, living in a noisy environment has meant that we probably have the habit of talking to a level of intensity that would surely be excessive a hundred years ago. This situation is producing changes in our behavior, attitudes and relationships, many of which we are not fully aware of. The number of appliances in use today in a city, each with its little noise contribution is much higher than it was thirty years ago, for instance. The usual amplification in a recital today is not even remotely close to what was used in the decade of the sixties. Buenos Aires does not “sound” in 2014 the same way it did in 1914: there are many lost sounds (those of trams and street vendors are just one example) and a lot of new other ones that were incorporated into everyday life (basically those produced by mobile technology) The amount of cars in a city is not the same today than of eighty or a hundred years ago. “For almost half a century ago, concern for the environment also extended to sound, to the sounds that any given environment encloses, destroys and creates.
