Constructed by hand start to finish, the difference between Haute Couture and fast fashion is that the designer’s endure an extreme attention to detail. Haute Couture is the main example of fashion being art. Simply, fashion is art because it is beautiful. Iris Van Herpen, (SPRING 19) mixes minimalism with abstract-ism to impact the visual momentum of each design. This is what makes designer, especially Haute Couture, more expressive and creative, and thus art.Īs well as this, fashion is continuously influenced by art movements, using similar palettes, patterns and techniques in clothing: You are wearing what someone once has created by hand, not just a factory. Embedded into a garment is someone’s physical, personal and intimate craftsmanship. What you have is a piece crafted by hand, representing an individual’s style. The processes match each other: the designing of the clothing, and the construction of the pieces are parallel to mapping out a painting before completing it with paint or whatever medium. This relates to the fashion world, as a designer’s collection can be seen as similar to a collection of art works by a specific artist. The feeling after creating a piece of artwork is aesthetically satisfying, fulfilling and a sense of content. What makes these creative forms art is the craft of it the well thought-out planning, the intense yet blooming creation and construction, and then the unique, distinctive outcome. It’s important to witness how fashion has developed and changed over time, whilst celebrating influential designers and recognising their impact on what we wear today. Fashion is fit for museums, as it represents the history of what people were wearing in the past, being a simulacrum of the political and societal concerns of points in time. Whilst this is true, I believe that fashion is a form of art, just as relevant as sculpture, fine art and even architecture. Yet his point is that fashion is not like art in the sense that it should be in museums, but rather it’s the importance of clothes in everyday life, and how this can essentially make life more interesting. He states, “fashion is not an art, it’s part of the art of living”.Īs a designer himself, Jacobs has experienced the hardship of creating fashion. I am interested in the life and the women who wore those clothes.” I have seen exhibitions of the clothes of Jackie Kennedy and I am not interested in her wardrobe. I think clothes in a museum are complete death. I make clothes and bags and shoes for people to use, not to put up on a wall and look at. ![]() “Fashion to me is not art because it is only valid if it is lived in and worn. The idea of fashion being an art form is jeopardized by the factories that mass produce repetitive and tedious designs, ultimately contributing waste to the world rather than innovative creations.īut firstly, how can fashion be considered a form of art? Whilst artistic powers still roam strong in the Haute Couture world, the extreme quantity of fast fashion produce leaves less room for originality, individualism, and less credibility to the designers who fast fashion steals it’s ideas from. ![]() ![]() Less means more, and more can mean a loss of value the excessive over-production of fashion has inevitably made its artistic value decrease.
